Abstract:

The European Commission is committed to fully integrating  Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) disciplines into the funding instruments of its Horizon Europe research and innovation funding programme, as well as to making AHSS a fundamental component of its evidence base for policymaking. At present, however, there remain many barriers to thorough and successful implementation of inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation between AHSS and other Sciences, particularly Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  This presentation gives an overview of the main results of SHAPE-ID, an EU-funded project addressing those challenges. Through a literature review, survey and a series of learning case workshops, the project gathered evidence from stakeholders, which was translated into a toolkit with recommendations for European policymakers, funders, universities, and researchers in achieving successful pathways to interdisciplinary integration between AHSS and other Sciences, as well as within AHSS disciplines. In the first part of the presentation, I’ll discuss the main obstacles, challenges, and suggested remedies for improving AHSS integration in inter- and transdisciplinary research. The second part will be dedicated to the demonstration of SHAPE-ID toolkit, containing practical recommendations and guidelines.
