Project title: Changes in transcription factor isoforms as a mechanism to switch gene expression during the differentiation of thalamic neurons
Project Description: The project is focused on the development of the thalamus, a brain structure that is involved in schizophrenia and autism. Thalamic neurons exhibit unique electrophysiological characteristics to regulate sensory information flow into the cortex. Neuron subtype features depend on the expression of a battery of genes, such as ion channel genes, which are induced only postnatally, long after neurogenesis. Mechanisms that trigger terminal maturation of neurons are enigmatic. In this project we seek to understand the role of switches between transcription factor isoforms in directing postmitotic differentiation in the thalamus. The project uses molecular techniques, animal experimentation and bioinformatics analysis. For more information please contact the group leader.br />
