Abstract:

Abstract: Self-assembly of biomembranes results from the intricate interactions between water and the lipids’ hydrophilic head groups. The lipid-(ion)-water interplay strongly contributes to modulating membrane architecture, lipid diffusion, and chemical activity. Our experimental efforts focus on understanding this three-way interplay and the molecular scale relation between structure and dynamics of biomimetic cell membranes and their hydration properties. The recently developed in our group methodology allows for precise control of the hydration of biomimetic cell membranes and routine studies on the structure and dynamics of lipid bilayers over a wide range of hydration states. Altogether, the presented results paint a detailed molecular-level picture of the effect of hydration on the properties of cell membranes as well as ion specific dependence of lipid mobility and membrane hydration structure.
