Abstract:
Hybrid structures of molecules and ferromagnetic metal substrates, comprising controlled chemisorptive interactions, exhibits intriguing magnetic interfacial phenomena such as magnetic hardening. We aim to explore such features to expand the scope of spintronics device functionality from the molecular perspective, targeting molecular architectures that are specifically designed for magnetotransport measurement via STM and which can mimic e.g. spin valves. Diamagnetic pyrene-based cyclophanes define possibly the sweet spot for such molecules that provide virtually perfect frontier orbitals, stabilities and structures. In first studies on different 3d metals, these species indeed reveal surprising spin polarization effects. This talk will summarize our current understanding and will provide an outlook what modifications are possible to such macrocycles, introducing chirality, magnetic anisotropy and redox activity.
