Abstract: The diversity of eukaryotic cellular forms is often hidden among obscure and divergent lineages of microbial eukaryotes. Sampling efforts and modern sequencing techniques allow us to identify not only new species but also new lineages of eukaryotes. This is relevant to basic research, as it can enable us to understand who we share this planet with and how the eukaryotic  cell evolved, as well as to applied research, as it can potentially lead to disease treatments.

In this presentation, I will focus on the recently discovered diverse lineages of microbial eukaryotes (aka protists) and examples of peculiar organisms that might alter our understanding of eukaryotic cell and their evolution. I will leverage both recent discoveries in the field of eukaryotic microbiology and the results.
