Abstract:

Abstract: Easter island was among the last prehistorically settled areas of Earth. To the general audience it is primary known for its remoteness and giant monolithic statues, moai. Another great mystery of the island is the independently developed writing system, rongorongo. In this presentations we will explore archeometric studies done in recent years on various rongorongo artefacts with particular emphasis on the Berlin rongorongo tablet which includes botanical wood identification, radiocarbon dating, photogrammetric study as well as reflectance transformation imaging. We will also present newly developed methodology for analysis of head glyphs of wooden figurines through 3D model of figurine head, projected on a sphere and unrolled onto a plane in a uniform and replicable fashion. New methods of study enable us to document previously unknown fragments of inscriptions.
