The results of the evaluation of the applications of the FNP operational program – funding for the team of prof. Jacek Jemielity.

The Foundation for Polish Science announced the results of the evaluation of applications submitted by the beneficiaries of current projects financed under measure 4.4. The Intelligent Development Operational Program for combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the applications recommended for funding was a project of a team led by Prof. Jacek Jemielity. The amount of funding is 2 million PLN. The research project concerns the search for enzyme inhibitors involved in the expression of SARS-CoV-2 genetic material both among existing drugs, non-drug substances as well as completely new compounds. The project involves close cooperation with the team of Prof. Marcin Nowotny, a structural biologist from the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology. The joint efforts of both groups are aimed at understanding the structure of protein-inhibitor complexes, which will allow the design of new inhibitors with the desired pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties.

The most promising compounds will be tested in specialized laboratories on COVID-19 disease cell models for therapeutic activity.
