Abstract: It seems clear now that the future of oncology relies in combination treatment that not only targets tumor-specific pathways but also engages the anti-tumor immune response. In the near future cancer immunotherapy is expected to become a major component of the combination treatment schedules for patients with multiple types of cancer. Despite spectacular antitumor effects, the response to immunotherapy is still insufficient in a large proportion of cancer patients.  It has been recently widely discussed that the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment constitutes a key barrier to effective immunotherapy. Therefore, a more comprehensive understanding of immunoregulatory factors and mechanisms of development of the immunosuppressive milieu may help to design new potent therapeutic strategies to harness the full power of cancer immunotherapy.
