Abstract: Although more than 7000 different enzyme activates have been already classified by the Enzyme Commission, about 20% of them are still lacking an associated protein sequence. These particular activities are frequently named “orphan enzymes” to highlight the fact that they represent activities with no molecular identity. Since very little is known about their biochemical and molecular properties and no genes encoding them are identified, orphan enzymes are (nearly) absent from popular genomic and proteomic databases, inevitably becoming forgotten. This seminar will present some of the more interesting examples of recently identified orphan enzymes, including the results of our studies, illustrating the importance of research on these proteins.
