About me:
Łukasz Lamża is a philosopher of science and science journalist. He works at the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Jagiellonian University, where he is responsible for interdisciplinary research programmes and science communication. He is also an active journalist, a member of the editorial team of “Tygodnik Powszechny”, and regularly publishes science videos on YouTube.

Abstract:

Communicating the results of your research is increasingly important: many funding agencies now require that studies done with their support be described not only in the scientific literature, but also in popular media. Many scientists enjoy reaching out to wider audiences. There are certain core principles of communication that one must know before writing or speaking about science, such as using generally comprehensible language, avoiding unnecessary detail and finding a way to connect with the audience. There is also the problem of going too far: trying to over-hype your research and, as a result, engaging in misinformation. The purpose of the talk is to go through a number of cases from recent science journalism to illustrate these issues.
