Environmental Modelling Specialist


funded by the National Science Centre within SONATA grant:
The extent of eastern Andean tree line over the last 30 years - a global analysis in the context of Amazonia's climate adaptation
based at the Centre of New Technologies of the University of Warsaw,
under the supervision of dr Przemysław Żelazowski

  • work load:                    2-4 days per week
  • remuneration:             2000-4000 PLN per month
  • period:                          1 year (extension might be considered)

Scope of research:

  • analysis of forest distribution in the Eastern Andes based on available satellite imagery (Landsat, in particular) and purpose-built algorithms
  • identification of environmental factors responsible for the contemporary changes in forest distribution across research area
  • generation of a set of climate patterns based on the CMIP5 dataset (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5)
  • modeling of forest range using ecophysiological models and climatic data

Work tasks:

  • overall project support in the area of environmental modelling using geographical data
  • assistance in building and organising datasets
  • support in designing algorithms for processing of satellite data and other spatial data
  • algorithm implementation
  • participation in research planning and conducting experiments
  • contributing to writing scientific manuscripts and preparing conference contributions


  • commenced or accomplished MSc in the area encompassing geoinformatics
  • experience in building algorithms that involve processing of spatial data
  • ability to code in at least two of the following languages/scripts: Python, C, Matlab, Java, Java Script
  • ability to work in both Linux and Windows
  • experience in scientific publishing
  • good written and spoken English
  • good communication skills and ability to work autonomously
